The story of Edmond Christian Montessori is the story of us: Jered and Emily Lawrenson.  We met while working with children, we started a childcare home as a way for Emily to stay at home with our kids several years ago, and now own Edmond Christian Montessori so that we can provide the best education to our children and yours.  What is unique about our school is that our children are here too.  This is our home.  We will teach and train your kids right next to our own, and you can go about your day knowing that your kids are in the most loving, caring, Christ centered education facility that you can offer them.  They will learn, grow, try, fail, respond, and succeed, all in the context of a family.  When you choose to come to Edmond Christian Montessori, you are choosing to be a part of our family, and that is something that we take very seriously.

Why Montessori

The Montessori method concentrates on the developmental needs of every child. Dr. Montessori believed that everyone learns differently, and at his or her own pace.  The method allows the teacher to concentrate on the specific and tangible needs of every child.   By using a prepared environment, each student can choose their own work and grow in the areas in which they choose to grow, without regards to tests, milestones, or expectations.  The method relies on the foundational belief that children know what and when they want to learn and will absorb that information when they are allowed to explore it.

The goal is not to memorize, recite, or regurgitate facts, but to KNOW concretely what something means and how to apply it to everything.

When our daughter was 1 1/2 and she could say "one" and "six".  However it is not until she understood that six has a concrete relationship with an amount, that she could take that knowledge and apply it every day.  That is what our preschool is about.  It’s not about learning the word six; it’s about applying the amount of six throughout life.  Through that learning, she can find out for herself if something is six, what does that mean.  What is bigger than six, or smaller than six, or when I have 7 sets of 6 what does that look like?  All of these questions occur naturally in preschool aged children, through what Dr. Montessori calls the absorbent mind.  If we let the children find and solve problems on their own, we might be surprised at what they will learn.

Our prepared environment is different in that it is our home.  The downstairs is all designated for our school and we live in the upstairs space.  In our Montessori classroom we have space for math, geography, practical life, a sensorial area, and a space for language.  Each section is set up, so when the child chooses to learn an area, they can do it in a safe and orderly place, at their own pace, and with no expectations other than that they will try their hardest and they will not progress until they have mastered the foundations before.

We believe learning should be fun! Really Really fun!

We believe in hands on learning. (Which sometimes means getting dirty!) and we believe that the Montessori method is the best way to do this.

We believe in children learning through experiences and through movement. Not just in a desk.

We believe that kids can (and should) be outdoors, a LOT.

We believe in giving and teaching children to give more than they take.

We believe not all children learn the same and its our privilege to assist them in discovering the best learning methods for them.

We believe that a love for learning starts very young and is extremely important.

We believe teaching a child how to teach themselves is one of the most valuable lessons they could learn and that is one of our highest priorities.

We believe in teaching all aspects of the child: Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Spiritual.

Above all else we believe in Jesus Christ and we pray that is evident in all that we do.

We believe that children should be surrounded by the truth of God’s word every minute of their day, and that the principles of the Bible should be set in their hearts from the beginning.

We believe that your childhood is valuable and important. It will not last forever, so we spend a great amount of energy finding ways to make our children and your children’s childhoods incredible.

We believe that if you choose to send your child to Edmond Christian Montessori, they will love coming to school every day and their love for learning will grow and will last them a lifetime.

For me (Emily) I have been dreaming this dream for a long time! It started when I was in college. I was working at a really great school and loved so much about it. I knew that one day I would have a school of my own. I’ve been thinking about it and planning for it and working towards it every day since. A few years back while living in New Zealand I did a “Chazown” or “purpose” for my life assessment. It all completely revolved around being a Christ follower, Wife, and Mother first and foremost, but it also helped me know exactly what I was meant to do in this world. I wanted to move back and start the preschool right then! But of course God’s timing is perfect,  and we are finally within arms reach of my dream. I am so thankful for my husband’s job, but every day that he gets up and leaves for work I hate being away from him. I’ve always told him that we were not meant to be away from each other for 40 hours a week, and on top of that I think we make a pretty good team.

As for Jered, I knew well before he did what his purpose was in this life.  I tried to be patient, but I knew he was meant to teach children. He is phenomenal at it! Just as I was starting to lose faith in our preschool, he caught the dream, and big time!  We have 2 ¼ acres and so much room to do everything we want (home, school, garden, green house, aquaponics. Natural play space, small farm and zip line!!) and are still perfectly located in Central Edmond.

Emily has cared about early childhood education and preschool since I’ve known her.  When we were first married, she knew that she would have an early childhood center in our home long before kids were even on our radar.   Even while working at a preschool / pre-k in Edmond, she knew there was a better way to not only teach kids, but also enable childhood and preschool to be fun again.  When she was 9 months pregnant and cleaning multiple houses for a living, she would come home and we would talk about what her school was going to be. For everyone else this is a new school or a new adventure, but she has had some variation of our school in her mind since she was a child.  It hasn’t always been Montessori, but it always included our own children, in a loving environment, that centered on PLAY and outdoor adventure!  When we started working at Keystone Adventure School and Farm, she saw the beginnings of what her preschool philosophy was, but she was always trying to do things differently.  She loves children, she loves teaching kids, and she loves watching kids find their way.  She understands children and their motivations in a way that is different than mine and she never lets other peoples expectations cloud her foundational belief that kids can do so much more, if we just let them.  I have never known a better mother and teacher, and I’m pumped that she can share that love to your kids.

My husband is the most patient and forgiving person I have ever met. When we were dating and I was infatuated with him I never could have guessed just how amazing of a man and father he would become. Every day he helps me to become the person I want to be. He is exceptionally giving, honest, and kind. He is a wonderful example to our children and everyone around him of how to seek God. He strives every day to be more like Christ.

Anyone who knows my husband would tell you how good he is with kids. He is the baby whisperer in the church nursery and the guy all the toddlers and kiddos want to play with in the children’s church. He worked several years at a Christian children’s camp. He was a phenomenal PE teacher at a private school in college. He is a surprisingly good 3-year-old soccer coach. He is the guy at every family get together playing games in the back yard with the kiddos. He walks in the room and children flock to him. I am proud to be his wife and our kids are proud to be his children.
